About

Welcome, lovely. I’m Hillary, a mother and artist seeking a gentle and grace-adorned life. Wild by the River is a quiet journal where I share the rhythms and rituals of my life & heart, so wrap your hands around a mug of fresh coffee and come sit with me for a while.

After years of infertility, I became a first-time mama at forty years old and entered a season that required trust like never before. Trust for my beloved son and his future, trust through the wilderness of breastfeeding, mothering, and unexpected post-partum weight gain, trust through all the chaos engulfing our world, trust in business, marriage, health, and more.

Wild by the River is inspired by the blessedness of those who trust in the Lord:

Blessed is the {woman} who trusts in the Lord,
And whose hope is the Lord.
For {she} shall be like a tree planted by the waters,
Which spreads out its roots by the river,
And will not fear when heat comes;
But its leaf will be green,
And will not be anxious in the year of drought,
Nor will cease from yielding fruit.
Jeremiah 17:7-8

This is what I long for.

As a writer, artist and entrepreneur, I am always up to my eyelashes in a project of some kind. Right now, I'm discovering the grace of slow living and slow, gentle business as I learn (quite ungracefully at times), how to move forward with a toddler.

I write about theology and the gospel at Gracefolk Ministries and, if the Lord wills, plan to open my little handmade shop soon. As I seek to live by grace, mother by grace, make art by grace, and create a lifegiving home for my husband, son, and all who cross over my threshold, my foundational purpose is to fulfill a tender mission Christ gave two thousand years ago to a man He healed and set free (because He has done the same for me):

"And when he was come into the ship, he that had been possessed with the devil prayed him that he might be with him. Howbeit Jesus suffered him not, but saith unto him, Go home to thy friends, and tell them how great things the Lord hath done for thee, and hath had compassion on thee. And he departed, and began to publish in Decapolis how great things Jesus had done for him: and all men did marvel." Mark 5:18-20

If you’re in the East Texas area, please reach out. Maybe we can connect over a cup of coffee and speak of deep and sacred things.

There is a man I met in person once, a writer I loved. He wrote things that would bring on the closed eyes, the quick, soft groan of ugh, ye...

In the Wilderness

"Behold, I will do a new thing, now it shall spring forth; shall you not know it? I will even make a road in the wilderness and rivers in the desert." Is. 43:19

"Blessed is the {woman} Who walks not in the counsel of the ungodly, Nor stands in the path of sinners, Nor sits in the seat of the scornful; But {her} delight is in the law of the Lord, And in His law {she} meditates day and night. {She} shall be like a tree Planted by the rivers of water, That brings forth its fruit in its season, Whose leaf also shall not wither; And whatever {she} does shall prosper." Ps. 1:1-3
